Veneers Q&A
What do veneers do?
Veneers are extremely thin shells that bond to the front of your teeth. Veneers can enhance your smile and correct numerous smile imperfections, such as:
- Discoloration and stains
- Wide gaps
- Chips
- Broken teeth
- Pointy teeth
- Irregularly shaped teeth
- Short teeth
- Cracks
Veneers rest snugly on top of your natural teeth to enhance their appearance.
How do I get veneers?
If you’re interested in veneers, the first step is booking a consultation with Northwoods Dental Group. If the team determines that veneers are right for you, they schedule you two more appointments, one to prepare your teeth, and one to place the veneers.
Tooth preparation
During your second visit, your team prepares your teeth by anesthetizing the area around them, then removing about half a millimeter of enamel from each tooth.
The practice removes the tooth enamel so that your veneers will be in line with the rest of your natural teeth. Once they’ve prepared your teeth, they take an impression. The professionals who custom design your veneers use the impression to create the perfect fit for you.
It takes about a week for your custom veneers to arrive. During that time, the practice protects your teeth and gums by placing temporary veneers over your teeth.
Veneer placement
During your third visit to Northwoods Dental Group, your team places your permanent veneers. To do so, they first remove your temporary veneers.
Before they permanently adhere your new veneers to your teeth, the team tests their size, shape, and placement by attaching the veneers with a water-based glue. If necessary, they trim or otherwise reshape your veneers so that they’re perfect.
Next, your team removes the veneers and preps your teeth by cleaning, polishing, and etching them. Then, your team carefully applies dental cement to your teeth, lines up your veneers, and places them.
Finally, your team makes sure the cement dries before you leave the office by pointing a special light directly onto your new veneers.
What are veneers made from?
Northwoods Dental Group offers veneers made from various materials, including porcelain and IPS e.max®.
Porcelain
Porcelain veneers are popular for many reasons. First, they look like natural teeth and effectively mimic their light-reflecting properties. They are also stain-resistant, strong, and long-lasting.
E.max
E.max veneers are a newer type of veneer, made primarily from ultra-strong, ultra-thin pressed porcelain. E.max veneers deliver attractive, highly durable results. Because dentists can apply them in such thin layers, they require minimal tooth reshaping before application.
Composite resin
Composite resin veneers are made from a tooth-colored filling. Though they’re not as strong as other types of veneers, they’re inexpensive and easy to repair.
Veneers are an expedient alternative to other cosmetic dentistry options, such as crowns. If you’re interested in brightening, straightening, or enhancing your smile with dental veneers, reach out to Northwoods Dental Group for a consultation online or over the phone today.
